Magic Canvas: design graphics in your browser, by hand or by saying it

Magic Canvas (for Photoshop-style editing with brushes, masks and retouching, use Design Editor) is a layered graphic editor for social posts, flyers, postcards, business cards, web banners, email headers and photos. Start from a size, from a photo, or from a sentence (aiKit lays the design out for you), then change anything: by hand with layers, fonts and photo tools, or by telling aiKit in your own words. Editing is free; only the AI layout, AI changes and AI pictures use AI credit.

Starting a design

The start screen has three parts. Describe it, aiKit makes it: type or dictate what you need (who it's for, what it should say, the feel) and pick a size from the list, then press Make my design. The editor opens and the layout is built as real layers you can change; anything aiKit couldn't do is listed first under Not done yet. Facts like phone numbers, prices and addresses are only used if you typed them; otherwise you'll see a placeholder in brackets such as [Phone] to fill in.

Or start from a blank size: the tabs Social, Print, Web and Email each show sizes with a small picture of their shape (Instagram post 1080 × 1350, Story 1080 × 1920, Flyer 8.5 × 11 in, Business card 3.5 × 2 in, Poster 18 × 24 in, Website banner 1920 × 800, and the standard 600-wide email sizes: header 600 × 200, hero banner 600 × 300, picture 600 × 400 and two-column 300 × 300, which download at 2× by default so they stay sharp on phones). Custom size takes any width and height in pixels or inches and what it's for; inches mean print. Edit a photo opens a picture from your computer at its own size.

My designs lists the designs you saved (newest first, with a picture of each), searchable by name. Click one to reopen it with every layer still editable. Each design has its own address, so you can bookmark it or send the link to a teammate on your account.

The editor screen

Across the top: Designs (back to the start screen), the design's name (click to rename), its size, Undo and Redo, zoom (minus, the percentage, plus; click the percentage to fit the page), the Pro switch, Save design, and Download. On a trackpad or mouse wheel, scrolling moves the page and pinching (or Ctrl/⌘ + scroll) zooms.

Down the left is the rail: Text, Shapes, Photos, Brand and Layers. Each opens its panel beside the rail; click it again to close the panel and give the page more room. In the middle is the page on a gray desk. On the right are the settings for whatever is selected, or for the page itself when nothing is. Under the page is the AI bar.

Print sizes show two guide lines that never print: the solid red line is where the paper is cut (the trim), and the dashed blue line inside it is the safe area. Keep words and logos inside the dashed line. Colors and photos that should reach the edge of the paper should run past the red line to the page's outer edge (that extra 1/8 inch is the bleed).

Simple is the default. Turn on Pro to see exact position and size numbers (X, Y, W, H and turn in degrees) and blend modes (Multiply, Screen, Overlay and the rest) for any layer. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

Text, shapes, photos and your brand

Text: Add a heading, a subheading or body text, then double-click it on the page to type. With text selected, the right side has the font (31 fonts in groups: Clean, Bold, Condensed, Serif, Script, Handwritten, Fun, Retro), size, bold, italic, underline, Aa (switch between UPPER and normal case), alignment, color (your brand colors come first), letter spacing, line height, Curve (bend the line into an arch or a smile), and Effects: Outline (with its color and width) and Shadow.

Shapes: rectangle, rounded rectangle, circle, triangle, star, line, arrow and heart. Selected, a shape has fill (or No fill), border color and width, and corner rounding for rectangles. A rectangle behind text makes a color band or a label.

Photos: Upload from your computer (several at once), AI picture (describe it and press Make the picture; it takes 20 to 40 seconds and uses AI credit), or pick from your Graphics Library (search it right in the panel). Brand shows the colors and logos from the brand kits you saved in Logo Kit: click a color to color what's selected (or the background when nothing is), click a logo to add it.

Photo tools and Magic effects

Select a photo to see its tools. Quick fixes: Remove background and Enlarge 2× run free on your own device (the first use downloads the free model once). Magic effects, also free on your device: Auto-enhance measures the photo's light and color and sets brightness, contrast, color and a little sharpening for it, then tells you what it changed; Brighten colors gives colors more punch without making skin tones look painted.

Color look changes the photo's color profile: Natural, Teal & orange, Golden hour, Film, Matte, Cinematic, Pastel, Noir and Pop. Duotone paints the photo in two colors (dark parts in the first, light parts in the second); it starts with your brand colors when you have them. Subject effects find the subject on your device: Portrait blur blurs the background behind it, Color splash turns the background black and white while the subject keeps its color, and Sticker cuts the subject out with a white edge and a soft shadow.

Sliders: Vibrance, Sharpen, Film grain and Pixel art, then Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Warmth and Blur, and one-tap filters (B&W, Sepia, Vintage, Vivid, Cool, Warm, Faded). Reset adjustments puts the sliders and filters back. Crop shows a dashed box: drag and resize it, then press Crop (or Cancel). Shapes put the photo inside a circle, rounded rectangle, star or heart. Flip mirrors it.

Arranging layers

For any selected layer: See-through (how transparent it is), Position on the page (left, center, right, top, middle, bottom, measured to the safe area on print sizes), Bring to front, Send to back, Duplicate, Lock and Delete. While dragging, a red line shows when the layer is centered on the page and it snaps there.

The Layers panel lists everything top first, with an icon for text, photo or shape. Click a name to select it, double-click to rename it (the AI uses these names too), and use the arrows to move it up or down, the eye to hide or show it, and the lock to lock it so it can't be moved by accident.

Keyboard: Delete or Backspace removes what's selected, ⌘Z undoes, ⇧⌘Z redoes, ⌘D duplicates, ⌘C and ⌘V copy and paste, the arrow keys nudge (hold Shift for bigger steps), Escape clears the selection. On Windows use Ctrl instead of ⌘.

Telling aiKit what to change

Type or dictate any change in the bar under the page and press Do it: “make the background darker”, “move the logo to the top right”, “curve the headline and make it gold”, “warmer photo with a film look”, “blur the background behind the person”, “add a red SALE badge in the corner”. On an empty page the same bar makes a whole design. aiKit reads your layers (their names, words, sizes and places) and changes them; nothing is re-drawn from scratch.

Every request is treated as a checklist. Anything that wasn't done is shown first under Not done yet with the reason (for example, removing a person from inside a photo can't be done here), and the rest is listed with a check mark. Undo this AI change puts the design back exactly as it was; ordinary Undo works too. Under each result you can rate it with a thumbs up or down and say what went wrong; Send and fix it asks aiKit to try again with your note.

Saving and downloading

Save design keeps the whole design with every layer, so you can reopen it from My designs and keep editing. Photos you uploaded or made with AI are put in your Graphics Library (folder Designs/Photos) the first time you save, so the design stays small and opens on any computer.

Open in Design Editor (next to Download) puts the finished design in your Graphics Library and opens it in Design Editor, to finish by hand with Photoshop-style tools.

Download opens one window. File type: PNG (sharpest, keeps see-through parts), JPG (smaller; pick Best, High or Smaller file), PDF (for print sizes: 300 dpi with the 1/8 inch bleed, crop marks on or off, and the trim size set in the file so print shops see it; for other sizes, one page at the design's size), or SVG (text and shapes stay vector; fonts are linked). For screen sizes pick 0.5×, 1×, 2× or 3×. Where it goes: Download to this computer, or Save to Graphics Library with a name, category, tags, client and project; the saved file links straight to its place in the library.
