Recipe Maker: dinner from what's in your fridge

Recipe Maker (/tools/recipe-maker, in the Tool library under Learning, games & wellbeing) turns the food you already have into recipes. Type what's in your fridge or pantry, or add a photo of it, pick any diet, a time, servings and your skill, and get three different ideas. Pick one for the full recipe with amounts, steps, tips and a shopping list of only what's missing. It is open to every signed-in account and each step uses a few of your account's tokens. This guide walks the left column, the ideas, the full recipe and Your recipes.

What you have, and your limits

The first box, What's in your fridge or pantry?, takes plain words ("eggs, half a bag of spinach, feta, rice"); amounts are optional. The microphone button in its corner lets you say it instead. Use an example fills the box with a sample list so you can see how it works. Add a photo of it takes a picture of your open fridge, pantry shelf or counter: your browser shrinks it, it is read in the same step as the ideas, and it is not stored. Remove photo takes it off. Words and a photo can be used together.

Diet chips pick any of 10 diets: Vegetarian, Vegan, Pescatarian, Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Nut-free, Low-carb / keto, High-protein, Halal and Kosher. Every recipe follows all the chips you pick. Time is the most the whole recipe may take (15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or Any time). Servings goes from 1 to 12 with the minus and plus buttons. Skill is Beginner (simple steps and common tools), Home cook, or Confident. Anything else? takes any request in your words, such as "microwave only", "kid friendly" or "use up the spinach", and it is followed as a rule.

Get recipe ideas starts. The button says what it uses: about 1 token, with or without a photo. If you press it with nothing in the box and no photo, it asks you to list a few things first and nothing is used. The header shows how many tokens your account has left today.

2

The three ideas

While it works the right side says what is happening (reading your photo, matching what you have, picking three ideas). Then three cards appear, each with its cuisine and total minutes, the name, one line on why it suits you, and either Uses only what you have or Needs and the items you would buy. Working with lists the ingredients it understood, including what it saw in your photo, so you can spot a misread.

If part of your request isn't possible (for example vegan with only eggs and cheese), a Not done yet note comes first and says what wasn't met and why. Make this one writes that recipe (about 1 token). Three different ideas asks again for a new set. The line under the cards says how many tokens the ideas used, and the thumbs let you rate them.

3

The full recipe

The recipe shows the name, a one-line summary, total, prep and cook minutes, servings, difficulty and tags (the diets it truly meets and the cuisine). Ingredients lists each one with its amount in US units (metric in brackets where it helps), how many of them are already in your kitchen, and a to buy label on the rest. The Shopping list holds only the items to buy, with amounts; when nothing is missing it says so. Steps are numbered, with times and doneness cues and safe cooking temperatures where they matter. Tips gives a swap, a make-ahead or a leftover idea.

The bar on top has Back to ideas, Save (it turns into Saved; press it again to take the recipe out of Your recipes), Print (prints the recipe only, without the app around it), and Share. Share makes a private link and copies it: anyone with the link sees that recipe and its dish picture only, never your account, your pantry list or the cost. Once shared, the button reads Copy link, and Stop sharing turns the link off for good (sharing again makes a new link). Sharing also saves the recipe.

Picture of the dish makes a photo of the finished dish on request (2 tokens). Change it takes any change in your words, such as "make it spicier", "no oven", "double it" or "swap the rice for pasta" (about 1 token); the quick buttons under it (Make it spicier, Double it, No oven, Make it vegetarian, Fewer dishes to wash) do the same in one click. A change rewrites the amounts, steps and shopping list, and when part of it isn't possible a Not done yet note says what was left out. A change removes the old dish picture, because the dish is different now. The line under it says what that step used and what the recipe has used in all. Thumbs down asks what went wrong and can send your words as a change.

Your recipes, costs and limits

  • Your recipes, under the result, lists every saved recipe with its time and servings, and shared ones say shared. Click a name to open it; the address changes to /tools/recipe-maker?recipe=… so you can bookmark it. The trash button deletes a recipe and turns off its share link.
  • Tokens: ideas (with or without a photo), a full recipe and each change about 1 each, a dish picture 2. A step that fails uses nothing, and the message says Nothing was charged.
  • Recipes you never save are cleared after 7 days. Saved recipes stay until you delete them. Fridge photos are never stored.
  • The AI can misread a photo, suggest an amount that's off, or miss an allergen in a packaged food. Check labels, allergens and cooking temperatures yourself, and don't rely on it for a medical or allergy-critical diet.
