A website's Send us your file page: drop up to 3 print files, say what they are, with each file checked for print on arrival

What you get

Every print file a customer sends through your website's Send us your file page is checked as it arrives (size, bleed, resolution, fonts, colors), with Fix it in Prepress Studio one click away.

Checked the moment it arrives

The customer gets their "File received" answer right away and never waits. A few seconds later the result is on the request.

One clear verdict

Looks print-ready, Worth a look, or Must fix, with up to five plain lines like "A photo is only 96 ppi at its printed size."

The five things that stop a job

Finished size, bleed (1/8 in is the usual), the lowest photo resolution at print size, fonts not embedded, and RGB or spot color.

Fix it in one click

Fix it in Prepress Studio opens with the customer's file already added and a starting request you can change. Nothing runs until you press Start.

Only you see it

The result is for the owner and staff on the Requests tab. Your customer never sees it.

What uses AI, and what’s free

The check is code, not AI, so it uses none of your monthly AI allowance and no Prepress Studio job. A fix becomes a Prepress Studio job only when you press Fix it in Prepress Studio and then Start.

Works with your other aiKit tools

Keep Print file check on upload in any of your kits, next to the tools you use with it. One account and one monthly AI allowance cover every tool.

How it works

From first click to finished, in 4 steps.

  1. Add Send us your file to your website

Add it from the Tool library or the project's Kit tab. Your site gets a page where customers send up to 3 files with a note about what they're for.

  2. A customer sends a file

PDF, AI saved with PDF content, EPS, PNG, JPG, TIFF, and PSD files are checked as soon as the request is stored.

  3. Read the result on the request

Under each file on the Requests tab: the verdict and plain lines for size, bleed, resolution, fonts, and colors.

  4. Fix it or reply

Open it in Prepress Studio to fix it, or go back to the customer for a better file. Check again runs the check once more any time.

Who it’s for

How different businesses use Print file check on upload

Print, promo & signs

Sort the morning's uploads at a glance

Harbor Line Print Co. opens Requests to find four files marked Looks print-ready and one marked Must fix for a 96 ppi photo. The must-fix goes to Prepress Studio first.

Events, lighting & AV

Banner files before the event deadline

An event signage company sees right away that a banner file has fonts that aren't embedded, and asks the customer for a new file the same day, not the day before the show.

Marketing & agencies

Client artwork for a print run

An agency takes client logos and photos through its site. RGB files show as Worth a look, so the team knows which ones to convert before they go to the printer.

Trades & service businesses

Vehicle lettering and yard sign art

A sign and lettering shop sees which customer logos are sharp enough before quoting, and which need a vector file.

Ideal for

  • Print shops and sign shops taking files through their website
  • Anyone whose customers send logos and artwork

Good to know

  • Not for: Checking against a product the customer picked; it reads the file itself (it doesn't know the order yet)
  • Not for: Your customers: they never see the result
  • PDF, AI (saved with PDF content), EPS, PNG, JPG, TIFF and PSD are checked; SVG files are not.
  • Files without a marked trim are read from their page size, so the bleed line may ask you to confirm the finished size.
  • Files can be up to 4 MB together (the upload page's own limit).

Questions

Print file check on upload: questions people ask

How can I check customer print files automatically when they upload?
Add aiKit's Send us your file page to your aiKit website. Every print file a customer sends through it (PDF, AI saved with PDF content, EPS, PNG, JPG, TIFF, or PSD) is checked automatically as it arrives, after the customer already has their confirmation, so they never wait. The result shows on the request in your project's Requests tab: Looks print-ready, Worth a look, or Must fix, with plain lines for the finished size, bleed, resolution, fonts, and colors. Fix it in Prepress Studio opens that file in aiKit Prepress Studio, ready to fix.
What does aiKit's print file check look at?
Five things, each as one plain line. Size: the finished size and page size of a PDF, from its trim box or crop marks, or the pixel size of a picture. Bleed: whether color runs far enough past the trim (1/8 in is the usual), or that nothing runs to the edge so no bleed is needed. Resolution: the lowest photo resolution at its printed size; under 150 ppi is a must-fix and under 250 is worth a look. Fonts: whether every font is embedded, naming any that aren't. Colors: CMYK, grayscale, spot colors, or RGB, which is worth a look because bright blues and greens can print duller.
Do my customers see the result of the print file check?
No. In aiKit, the print file check on upload is for you and your staff only. Your customer gets their "File received" answer the moment they press Send and never waits for the check or sees its result. On the request in your project's Requests tab, each file shows Checking this file for print for a few seconds, then its verdict and plain lines. Reviewers on the project see that a file arrived, but not the check's buttons or the file itself.
Does the print file check use AI or cost anything?
The aiKit print file check on upload uses no AI. It measures the file with code, the same way a preflight check does, so it doesn't use any of your account's AI allowance. AI only comes in if you choose to fix the file: Fix it in Prepress Studio opens aiKit Prepress Studio with the file added, and nothing runs and no Prepress job is used until you press Start there.
Which file types does the print file check read?
aiKit's print file check reads PDF, Illustrator files saved with PDF content, EPS, PNG, JPG, TIFF, and PSD. SVG files are not checked, because an SVG can carry code; they still arrive and download as usual. A file that won't open for the check, like an Illustrator file saved without PDF content, gets a must-fix line saying why, so you know to ask the customer to save it again with Create PDF Compatible File checked.
Why does the check ask me to confirm the finished size?
Many customer files have no trim size marked. When that happens, aiKit's print file check reads the size from the page itself. If the page is exactly a common finished size and color runs to the edge, it says the file needs 1/8 in bleed. If the page looks like a finished size plus 1/4 in, it says the file looks like it already has 1/8 in bleed and asks you to confirm the finished size. Your customer's order is the final word on size, since the check reads only the file.
Can I fix a customer's file right from the request?
Yes. On each checked file in the Requests tab, Fix it in Prepress Studio (Open in Prepress Studio when it already looks print-ready) opens aiKit Prepress Studio with the customer's file added and a starting request, "Check this customer's file for print and fix what it needs," that you can change. Nothing runs and no job is used until you press Start. From there you get a print-ready PDF, a full file check, and a proof you can send your customer to approve.
How big can customer files be on the Send us your file page?
Customers can send up to 3 files on the aiKit Send us your file page, 4 MB together, in PDF, AI, EPS, SVG, PNG, JPG, TIFF, or PSD. They say what the file is and what it's for, then press Send. For larger files, the page points them to your email or phone. Each send lands on the project's Requests tab with a File badge, each file's name and size, and the print check result. Only the project's owner, staff, and admins can download the files.
Do I need an aiKit website to use the print file check?
Yes. The print file check runs on files that arrive through the Send us your file page on an aiKit website, so it's added to a site from the Tool library or the project's Kit tab. If you'd rather check a file you already have, open aiKit Prepress Studio, add the file, and choose Check my file before printing. That gives a detailed report with what was measured, the rule, where on the page, and how to fix it.
What does Check again do?
Check again runs aiKit's print file check on that file once more. Use it when a result shows "The check didn't finish," which happens if the check runs past about three minutes. Files that arrived before the check was added show Not checked for print yet, with Check this file to run it. Owners and staff see these buttons; reviewers don't.
Is there a free print file checker for customer uploads?
Yes. On an aiKit website with the Send us your file page, aiKit's print file checker runs automatic preflight on upload: every print file is read as it arrives, with no AI and no Prepress Studio job used. Each file on the Requests tab gets Looks print-ready, Worth a look, or Must fix, with plain lines for size, bleed, resolution, fonts, and colors, so you check print files for bleed and check PDF resolution for print without opening them. A picture under 250 ppi is worth a look, and under 150 ppi it must be fixed. It reads PDF, AI saved with PDF content, EPS, PNG, JPG, TIFF, and PSD. Press Fix it in Prepress Studio to open the file there, or Check again any time. Your customers never see the result.
