A custom domain is the web address a business owns, such as greenhavengardens.com. Website platforms usually start a new site on a temporary address of their own; connecting a custom domain points your own name at that site. It is done by adding a couple of records, called DNS records, wherever the domain was bought.
Your own domain looks more trustworthy, is easier to remember and keeps your search rankings and links when you change platforms later. Email on the domain keeps working as long as its mail records are left alone.
Imagine a tailor called Needle & Thread Alterations that launches its new site on a temporary address to test it with a few customers. When it is ready, it connects its own domain, the secure https lock turns on, and its business cards finally point to a working site.
In aiKit, you connect your own domain from a project's Hosting tab, which walks through the two DNS records step by step, with guides for common domain sellers. aiKit turns on HTTPS once the records are in place, and the temporary aiKit address keeps working.
