Safe area

The safe area is the zone inside the trim line where text and logos stay clear of the cut, so nothing important gets trimmed off.

The safe area, sometimes called the safe zone or live area, is a margin inside the trim line. Anything you cannot afford to lose, such as words, a logo, a phone number or a QR code, belongs inside it. A common safe margin is 1/8 inch in from the trim on small pieces, and larger on signs and banners.

Because cutting can drift slightly, text placed right against the edge can be clipped or look crooked. The safe area also gives a design breathing room, which usually makes it easier to read.

Say a food truck called Saffron Wheels orders menu cards with the web address tucked into the bottom corner. It sits outside the safe area, and on a few cards in the stack the last letters are trimmed off. Moving it a quarter inch in fixes the whole run.

In aiKit, Printer's Helper moves art inside the safe area as an exact print step and can follow a saved printer's own bleed and safe area. Magic Canvas print sizes mark the safe area for you, and Customer Proofs shows safe lines to your customer on the proof.
